ALUMNI 100

Before careers and families became the center point of our lives, for many of us, there were the Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena. Conventions by the pool, basketball tournaments, parties, and, of course, meeting and socializing with young Greeks of the opposite sex. Many of us reflect back on these days with the warmest of memories. No organization combined fun with civic responsibility like the Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena. You probably remember spending a convention drinking by the pool, but there were so many other important and valuable life lessons that the Sons and Maids taught us. Do you remember working tirelessly on that year's National Project? Do you remember attending blood drives? Do you remember buying toys for disadvantaged children? More importantly (although you probably didn't realize it at the time), you fraternized with fellow Greeks. All your friends were probably Greek. Perhaps you met your spouse through involvement in the Sons and Maids. Undoubtedly, the Sons of Pericles and the Maids of Athena helped generations of Greek-Americans and Greek-Canadians preserve their Hellenic identity. And although everyone had a great time, there was always a nobler purpose: thousands of dollars raised for charity; book drives; clothing drives; volunteer work; and perhaps most importantly, you weren't a New Yorker or a Chicagoan volunteering, but you were a Greek volunteering!

In recent years however, this identity of being Greek is slowly, but surely, deteriorating. The Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena recognized this a few years ago, and consequently formed "The Sons and Maids Youth Foundation, Inc.," a 501C-3 corporation whose main goals are the promotion and proliferation of the educational, civic and leadership initiatives of young Hellene adults, and more specifically, to insure that the Sons and Maids will be around for future generations to enjoy.

To help insure this, the Board of Directors of the Sons and Maids Youth Foundation have initiated the "Alumni 100 Club." We are asking past Sons and Maids to make a commitment to contribute $100 per year for 10 years to the Sons and Maids Youth Foundation, Inc. All contributions are tax-deductible. All money raised will benefit the Sons and Maids and the wonderful programs that they support. These contributions will insure that all the great times you had during your tenure with the Sons of Pericles will be available for future generations to enjoy. The Sons and Maids Youth Foundation, Inc. seeks to empower young Greek-Americans and Greek-Canadians to not only learn about their rich Hellenic history, but to help promulgate it. With your tax-deductible contribution and 10 year commitment, you will be doing your part towards insuring that the Hellenic language, culture, ideals and values will continue with the youth of today.
